In his election, the people of New York sent a message that politics as usual in New York was over. Governor Pataki's mandate was broad and tough: cut taxes, restore the environment, reduce crime, restructure the state's welfare system, and attract jobs to New York by improving the state's business climate. It was a tough job, but George Pataki has never been afraid of hard work. He started from day one to deliver on the promises he made to the people of New York. Since taking office on January 1, 1995, he has accomplished each of those goals and much more.
