Governor Pataki has made fundamental changes to New York's criminal justice system, making our streets and neighborhoods safer than they have been in more than 25 years. He has restored the death penalty, toughened sentences, ended work release for violent criminals, ended parole for repeat violent felons, and signed Megan's Law to protect our children from violent sexual predators. Violent crime has fallen in New York by twice the national average and New York is number one in reducing violent crime among all large states. The statewide murder rate fell by nearly 50 percent during Governor Pataki's first three years in office.
