In a September 16, 1999, Baltimore Sun article entitled, "Lockheed Comsat Purchase Advances; FCC OK's 49% deal," (p. 1D), Sean Somerville reported that the deal passed muster at the FCC, and now awaited approval by the Department of Justice, which was expected. Somerville reported that the deal, at 49 percent would cost Lockheed $1.3 billion at $45.50 a share, and $455 million of Comsat debt. The Senate approved the deal in July, but the House has not yet acted. Reporter Somerville also cited the delay being caused by Lockheed having to sell its 14 percent stake in Loral Space and Communications Ltd. to allay antitrust converns.
